If Rahu is the head, what exactly is Ketu?
Ketu is the other half of the same story: the headless body of the demon Svarbhanu, severed by Vishnu's discus after Svarbhanu was caught drinking stolen amrita during the churning of the ocean. Where Rahu is a head with appetite and no body to feel consequence, Ketu is the mirror image — a body with no head, meaning no face to look outward with, no mouth to want with, no eyes to be dazzled by the world's surface. In most classical readings, this makes Ketu the natural planet of introspection, since a being with nothing to perceive the outer world through is left with nothing to do but turn its attention inward.
What does Ketu actually represent in a chart?
Ketu is the descending lunar node: the point where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic from north to south. It is not a physical body. Within the same node convention, Rahu and Ketu are 180° apart. If Rahu’s longitude is 50°, Ketu is at (50 + 180) mod 360 = 230°, or 20° Scorpio. This is a hypothetical geometric example.
Astrology associates Ketu with detachment and liberation. These are religious and interpretive themes; the mathematical position does not establish past lives or spiritual attainment.
Why do people say Ketu's placements are confusing to talk about?
Because the exaltation and debilitation signs assigned to Ketu genuinely differ between classical sources — Scorpio or Sagittarius exaltation and Taurus or Gemini debilitation are common citations, but this is an area of real disagreement in the tradition rather than settled fact, and any confident single answer should be treated with some scepticism. What's more consistent across sources is Ketu's behaviour: like Rahu, it takes on the qualities of whatever house, sign, and planets it's placed with rather than asserting a fixed nature.
What a favourable interpretation means
Some interpretations associate Ketu with study, solitude, and introspection. “Past-life skill” belongs to a belief in reincarnation, not a verified account of someone’s innate ability. Research, healing professions, and other work require training and demonstrated competence.
Limits of an afflicted-Ketu interpretation
A difficult Ketu placement is sometimes read as a metaphor for tension between detachment and responsibility. The headless-body story does not explain physical symptoms or difficulty obtaining a diagnosis. Describe unexplained symptoms for clinical assessment instead of attributing them to a node. A chart also cannot establish mental health or withdrawal from relationships.
Does Ketu run in dashas like the other planets, and what's the remedy?
Vimshottari assigns Ketu a seven-year mahadasha. The duration is a rule of that system. Meditation, service, or study may be personal or religious practices; they are not established ways to change Ketu’s effects. Gemstone associations should be attributed to a specific tradition; this article does not recommend buying or wearing a stone. So what's the actual lesson of a strong Ketu?
For reflection, distinguish detachment from avoiding responsibilities. Letting go of an unnecessary goal may be useful, but judge it through experience and obligations. This is an editorial question inspired by the symbol; a chart cannot determine what a particular person should give up.
