In the Vishnu Purana account of Budha’s birth, Tara identifies Soma, the Moon, as the father. Soma accepts the child and names him Budha. Parentage does not remain unresolved in this version. Describing Budha as never fully claimed by either family misrepresents this source.
Jyotish often interprets Mercury through its associations with other planets. That is an interpretive convention, not a psychological conclusion established by the birth story or evidence about someone’s identity.
What Mercury Rules
Budha is karaka for intellect, communication, commerce, analytical reasoning, wit, and formal education. It rules two signs, Gemini and Virgo, is exalted in Virgo near the fifteenth degree, and falls to its lowest strength in Pisces at the same degree — a debilitation classical astrologers read as sharp analytical intellect dissolving into Pisces' diffuse, non-linear intuition, a register Mercury was never built to operate in comfortably.
The Adaptable Mind, for Better and Worse
Language, reasoning, and trade are traditional Mercury associations. A “strong Mercury” does not establish intelligence or writing skill, and an “afflicted Mercury” does not establish anxiety or unreliability. Those judgments require actual experience, work, and conduct.
In the natural-friendship table, Mercury treats Sun and Venus as friends, Mars–Jupiter–Saturn as neutral, and Moon as an enemy. The relation is directional: the Moon’s table treats Mercury as a friend. This asymmetry belongs to the convention; it is not evidence of an unresolved father–son conflict.
Wednesdays, Emerald, and a Seventeen-Year Period
Wednesday and emerald are traditional Mercury associations. Vimshottari assigns Mercury a 17-year mahadasha. This is a rule of the timing system, not evidence that someone needs that many years to learn adaptability. A gemstone is not an established way to improve intelligence or health.
Example: dignity is not an ability score
Suppose Mercury’s sidereal longitude is 165°. Virgo begins at 150°, so Mercury is at 15° Virgo, traditionally the point of maximum exaltation. The arithmetic establishes a sign and degree; it does not establish a student’s grades, language ability, or professional competence. Assess those through actual work.
