What Is a Stellium? When Three or More Planets Cluster in One Sign or House

Quick Answer

A stellium — three or more planets in the same sign or house — concentrates enormous energy in one area of your chart. It's one of the most powerful features a natal chart can have, and one of the least understood.

Most people know their Sun sign. A smaller number know their Big Three — Sun, Moon, and Rising. But if you've looked more carefully at your birth chart, you may have noticed something striking: several planets clustered together in the same sign or house, almost as if they're gathered for a meeting.

That cluster has a name. It's called a stellium, and it's one of the most significant features a natal chart can contain.

What Counts as a Stellium?

The traditional definition requires at least three planets in the same sign or the same house. Some astrologers set the bar at four, particularly when looking at sign-based stelliums. The Sun, Moon, and the five traditional planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) are typically counted; the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are sometimes included, though they move so slowly that having one outer planet in a sign means an entire generation shares that placement.

The tightest and most potent stelliums involve personal planets — particularly combinations of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars — because these planets represent core aspects of identity, emotion, and drive. When three or more of these congregate in one sign, that sign's energy becomes enormously amplified in the person's life.

What a Stellium Means

The sign and house of a stellium describe an area of life where enormous energy is concentrated. Think of the rest of the chart as a multi-band graphic equaliser, with each sign and house representing a different frequency. A stellium turns one of those bands all the way up.

This has consequences in both directions. The area of a stellium tends to be where a person is most alive, most driven, most naturally talented — and simultaneously where they experience the most complexity, the most intensity, and sometimes the most difficulty. The concentration of energy is not a guarantee of ease; it's a guarantee of significance.

Sign Stelliums

A sign stellium means multiple planets are expressing themselves through the same sign's qualities. If you have four planets in Scorpio, for example, the Scorpio qualities — intensity, depth, psychological acuity, a gravitational pull toward transformation — are not just present in your chart; they are the dominant note. Your personality, emotions, communication, and drives all run through Scorpionic themes simultaneously.

Sign stelliums often make the native an extremely clear expression of that sign's archetype — sometimes to an almost textbook degree. They can also create what astrologers call a "signature" quality that colours everything the person does.

House Stelliums

A house stellium means multiple planets are gathered in the same department of life — the 7th house of relationships, the 10th house of career, the 12th house of solitude and the unconscious. Wherever three or more planets cluster, that house's domain becomes the stage on which much of the person's life plays out.

Someone with a 1st house stellium may have an exceptionally strong sense of self — or an exceptionally complex relationship with identity. Someone with an 8th house stellium often finds themselves drawn repeatedly into themes of power, transformation, shared resources, and depth psychology. The house doesn't choose the themes; it reveals which arena of life most insistently demands engagement.

The Challenges of a Stellium

A stellium can be both a gift and a burden. The concentration of planetary energy in one area means that the person has unusual focus and capacity in that domain — but it also means they may neglect or underdevelop the areas of life represented by less populated signs and houses.

Someone with a stellium in the 10th house (career and public life) may achieve remarkable professional success while finding personal relationships (7th house) or emotional depth (4th house) comparatively underdeveloped. The chart is not balanced; it is weighted. The work of the person's life often involves integrating the under-expressed parts of the chart rather than simply amplifying the stellium's strengths.

Stelliums in Synastry and Transit

When a planet in transit moves across your natal stellium, it activates not just one planet but several simultaneously — creating periods of concentrated intensity in that stellium's area of life. Similarly, in synastry, if one person's Sun, Moon, or Rising sign falls in the same sign as your stellium, there's an immediate resonance: their very being speaks directly to your concentrated energy.

Do You Have a Stellium?

To find out whether you have a stellium, you need your complete birth chart with all planetary positions. A basic sun sign reading won't reveal it — you need your birth date, time, and place to calculate the full chart.

AstroMystra's birth chart reading calculates your complete natal chart, showing the positions of all planets across all 12 signs and houses — making it immediately apparent if you have a stellium and where it falls. If you do, your reading will interpret what that concentration of energy means for your personality, life themes, and areas of greatest strength and complexity.
