Vimshottari Dasha ('the 120-year system') is the most widely used predictive timing tool in Vedic astrology. It assigns each of the nine grahas — Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury — a fixed-length ruling period, always in this same order, adding up to exactly 120 years.
Which planet's period you're born into, and how much of that first period remains, is determined entirely by the Moon's Nakshatra at birth and its exact degree within that Nakshatra. This is why an accurate birth time matters: it pins down your Moon's precise position, which is the seed from which your entire dasha sequence is calculated.
Each Mahadasha (major period, lasting anywhere from 6 to 20 years) is further divided into nine Antardashas (sub-periods) ruled by all nine planets in the same fixed order, starting with the Mahadasha's own lord. Astrologers read the interplay between the Mahadasha lord and Antardasha lord — their house placements, strength, and relationship to each other — to time major life events like career changes, marriage, relocation, or health matters.

It helps significantly. The Moon moves through roughly one degree every two hours, so an exact time gives precise dasha start and end dates. Without it, we use a noon-time estimate — your current Mahadasha is usually still correct, but exact transition dates can shift by a day or two.
