Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoot Milan, is the classical Vedic method for checking marriage compatibility between two people using their Moon nakshatra (birth star) and Moon rashi (Moon sign). It scores compatibility across 8 factors — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi — for a maximum of 36 points.
Each koota examines a different dimension of compatibility: spiritual temperament (Varna), mutual control and dominance (Vashya), health and well-being (Tara), physical and sexual compatibility (Yoni), mental and intellectual friendship (Graha Maitri), temperament and nature (Gana), family growth and prosperity (Bhakoot), and health of progeny (Nadi). Traditionally, a total score of 18 or above out of 36 is considered the minimum for a workable match, with 28 and above regarded as excellent.
