Understanding Planetary Transits: Your Cosmic Weather Forecast

Transits show how today's moving planets interact with your natal chart — revealing why this period of your life feels the way it does and what to focus on right now.

If your birth chart is a fixed photograph of the sky at the moment you were born, planetary transits are the live footage. They show where the planets are right now — and how those moving planets interact with the planets frozen in your natal chart.

Transits are the most widely used tool in predictive astrology. They explain why certain periods of your life feel charged with particular energy: why one year brings love into focus while another demands career sacrifice, why a month feels effortless while the next requires you to dig deep. Transits don't predict events with certainty — they describe the quality of time.

How Transits Work

Every planet in the sky is always moving. As a planet travels through the zodiac, it eventually reaches a point in the sky that forms a significant angle — called an aspect — with one of the planets in your natal chart.

When that happens, the transiting planet "activates" your natal planet. The result is a blend of two energies: the moving planet's current themes and the natal planet's lifelong themes.

For example:

  • Jupiter transiting your natal Venus might bring an expansion of love, beauty, or financial opportunity.
  • Saturn transiting your natal Moon might bring emotional discipline, responsibility around home and family, or a period of emotional sobriety.
  • Mars transiting your natal Sun might energise your drive and confidence — or create friction if not channelled well.

The Aspects That Matter

Not all angles are equal. The major transit aspects are:

Conjunction (0°) — The transiting planet merges with your natal planet. Intensity at its peak. Whatever themes that natal planet governs are amplified and front-and-centre.

Trine (120°) — A harmonious, flowing aspect. The transiting planet offers gifts to your natal planet with minimal friction. Things come more easily during trines.

Sextile (60°) — A cooperative, supportive aspect. Opportunities arise, but you need to reach for them — they don't land in your lap the way trines might.

Square (90°) — Dynamic tension. The transiting planet challenges your natal planet, creating friction that demands growth. Squares are often the aspects behind life's most productive struggles.

Opposition (180°) — A push-pull between two forces. External situations or other people often reflect back the tension. Finding balance is the key — neither extreme serves you.

Quincunx (150°) — A subtle but persistent adjustment. The energies don't naturally understand each other and require conscious integration.

Planet Speed and Duration

Each planet moves at a different speed, which determines how long a transit lasts:

| Planet | Approximate transit duration | |---|---| | Moon | 2–3 days per sign | | Mercury | 2–3 weeks per sign | | Venus | 3–4 weeks per sign | | Mars | 6–8 weeks per sign | | Jupiter | About 1 year per sign | | Saturn | 2–3 years per sign | | Uranus | 7 years per sign | | Neptune | 14 years per sign | | Pluto | 15–30 years per sign |

This is why the Moon's transits feel like daily weather — fleeting moods and minor shifts — while a Saturn transit feels like a sustained season of your life. Jupiter's transits bring growth windows that last a year. Pluto's transits mark generational turning points.

The Inner and Outer Planets

Inner planets (Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) move quickly and create frequent, short-lived activations. They're the daily and weekly weather — useful for understanding the immediate feel of a day or week, but not the defining texture of a period.

Outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) move slowly and create long-lasting activations. These are the transits that shape years and decades. When Saturn squares your natal Sun, for example, you'll feel that influence for months — and the lessons it brings are lasting.

Reading Your Transit Forecast

A transit forecast takes today's planetary positions and compares them against your natal chart. The result is a personalised map of active energies — which planets are being "switched on" right now, what themes they're activating, and how long the influence is likely to last.

To interpret your transits:

  1. Identify the transiting planet — What does that planet govern? Jupiter = expansion, luck, faith. Saturn = discipline, structure, responsibility. Mars = energy, desire, conflict.

  2. Identify the natal planet being activated — What part of your life does that natal planet govern? Your natal Moon relates to emotions and home. Your natal Mercury to communication and the mind. Your natal Venus to love and values.

  3. Consider the aspect — Is it flowing (trine, sextile) or challenging (square, opposition)? Flowing aspects show where things move naturally. Challenging aspects show where growth is required.

  4. Put it together — "Jupiter trine my natal Venus" = an expanding, flowing period for love and finances. "Saturn square my natal Moon" = emotional restructuring, extra responsibility around home and family.

Common Transit Experiences

Jupiter transits feel expansive, optimistic, and fortunate. Opportunities grow. Confidence rises. Watch for overreach — Jupiter's shadow is excess.

Saturn transits feel serious, pressured, and demanding. They ask you to build something real, take responsibility, and confront what isn't working. Hard in the moment, strengthening in retrospect.

Uranus transits feel surprising, disruptive, and liberating. Unexpected change arrives — sometimes chosen, sometimes not. Uranus breaks what has become too rigid to serve you.

Neptune transits feel dreamy, confusing, and spiritually rich. Boundaries dissolve, intuition peaks, but clarity is elusive. Avoid major decisions at the peak of Neptune transits; favour creative and spiritual work.

Pluto transits feel transformative and intense. What Pluto touches, it fundamentally changes — sometimes through crisis, sometimes through profound inner work. Pluto doesn't let you remain who you were.

Using Your Transit Forecast Wisely

The power of knowing your transits isn't prediction — it's preparation and understanding. When you know that Saturn is squaring your natal Moon, you can approach the emotional demands of that period with patience and intentionality, rather than confusion. When you know Jupiter is trining your natal Venus, you can actively pursue opportunities in love or finances rather than missing the open window.

Transits are the universe's calendar. Learning to read them is learning to work with the season you're in, rather than against it.
